5 Ways to Keep Soda from Destroying Your Teeth

Posted on 5/30/2016 by Lauren Pollard
Several bottles of soda beside each other. When it comes to the health of your teeth, soda is bad news. Not only will the sugar in soda feed decay-causing bacteria, but this beverage is also highly acidic and can wear down your enamel.

While it is important to limit soda consumption, you don't have to avoid soda completely as long as you follow a few steps to protect your teeth.

Choose Diet Soda

The sugars and acids in soda are what make the drink problematic for teeth. While diet soda will still have acid, it won't contain the sugar of regular options. This will give the bacteria in your mouth less food to do damage to your mouth.

Drink Your Soda Quickly
Instead of nursing a soda for an hour or more, try to drink it quickly in order to limit the amount of time its acids will contact your teeth. By gulping soda quickly, you can minimize the chances that your teeth will be affected by acid erosion.

Use Fluoride

It is important to make sure fluoride is part of your daily oral hygiene routine in order to protect your teeth and to fight erosion. Fluoride works to buff your teeth against acids while strengthening the enamel to resist daily damage and daily wear and tear.

Don't Brush Right Away

You might be tempted to brush your teeth immediately after drinking a soda, but you should hold off. However, the acids in soda will soften your enamel, so wait to brush for at least 30 minutes in order to prevent doing additional damage.

Rinse Out Your Mouth

Instead of brushing, you should consider rinsing your mouth out with water in order to remove harmful acids from your teeth. The result will be less risk of experiencing erosion without any dangerous scrubbing and wearing away of the enamel.
