Snoring affects millions of people of all ages, both male and female. Snoring is caused by a high velocity of air passing over soft tissues of the palate and nasopharynx, causing the tissues to vibrate rapidly thus making the typical snoring sound. Often there is narrowing of the air passages in a snorer which makes the problem worse. Non-surgical treatment involves the
construction of an appliance which moves the jaw forward during sleep, opening the airway for better airflow. Surgical treatment involves the removal of tissue to improve airflow.
Snorers may actually have their airway obstructed to the point they stop breathing during sleep. This condition is known as sleep apnea. People suffering from sleep apnea have their normal sleep patterns interrupted many times a night, not allowing for them to sleep properly or feel rested the next day. Patients who snore and/or are chronically fatigued are often referred to a sleep specialist or sleep center for evaluation.
